What is llms.txt?

A map of your site for AI assistants

It’s a Markdown file at yoursite.com/llms.txt: your site’s name, a one-line summary, then your key pages and posts as links with short descriptions. The format was proposed in 2024 at llmstxt.org.

Will it get me into AI answers?

Not on its own. Adoption is still early, and Google has said its search doesn’t use llms.txt. It takes two minutes to add, and any AI tool that does read it gets a clean summary of your site instead of guessing from your HTML. What gets you quoted is still clear, useful pages that other sites trust.

How do I add it?

Upload the file to the root of your website, so it opens at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt. On WordPress, the free MSH SEO plugin serves it for you and keeps it current as you publish.

Questions people ask about llms.txt

What the file is for, what it will not do, and where to put it.

What is llms.txt?

A proposed convention: a plain-text file at yoursite.com/llms.txt that lists your important pages, so an AI assistant can find them without crawling your whole site. Think of it as a reading list rather than a rulebook.

Do AI assistants actually read it?

Adoption is early and uneven, and no major assistant promises to use it. We are not going to pretend otherwise. It costs nothing to publish, it doubles as a clean map of your own site, and if the convention sticks you are already there.

Will it change my Google rankings?

No. It is not a Google standard and it will not move rankings. Your robots.txt and sitemap.xml still do that job, and this file does not replace either.

Where does the file go?

At the root of your site, reachable at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt. Upload it there, or let a plugin serve it for you.

How does the generator build it?

It reads your sitemap, takes the title and description of each page it finds, groups them into sections, and writes the file. Nothing is stored and nothing is published for you — you get the text to copy.

How do I keep it current?

Regenerate it whenever you publish something worth an assistant finding. On WordPress the MSH SEO plugin serves the file and refreshes it on every publish, so you never think about it again.
